Post 5 – What Do the Scriptures Principally Teach?
Q5. What do the Scriptures principally teach?
A. The Scriptures principally teach, what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.
The Two Pillars: Belief and Obedience
Every page of Scripture, every command, every promise, every story—can be traced back to two foundational themes:
What we are to believe concerning God
What God requires of us in response
This simple framework gives us a map for spiritual maturity and faithful living. The Bible is not a fragmented library. It’s a unified curriculum for transformation—shaping our worldview and forming our obedience.
1. What We Are to Believe Concerning God
Scripture first teaches us about God Himself:
Who He is (holy, eternal, just, merciful)
What He has done (creation, redemption, providence)
How He has revealed Himself (through His Word, His Son, and His Spirit)
At its heart, Scripture is not about us—it’s about God.
“In the beginning, God…” — Genesis 1:1
“That they may know You, the only true God…” — John 17:3
The Bible doesn’t just ask for belief in abstract ideas. It presents a personal, covenantal, sovereign God who calls us to trust Him.
Reflection: As a leader, husband, and father, I’ve learned that what I believe about God shapes everything—from how I lead under pressure to how I respond in weakness. Right belief grounds bold action.
2. What Duty God Requires of Man
But belief is never meant to stay theoretical. The Scriptures also show us how to live in light of who God is.
How to worship
How to love our neighbor
How to pursue justice, humility, and holiness
How to submit our lives, finances, decisions, and time to His will
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you…” — Micah 6:8
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” — John 14:15
This duty is not cold obligation—it’s grace-fueled obedience. God doesn’t just declare salvation—He disciples us into purpose.
Reflection: The world separates belief from behavior. But Scripture ties them together. What God reveals about Himself demands a response—not out of guilt, but out of worship.
A Balanced Life
This Q&A invites a whole-life discipleship:
Believe rightly
— Know God truly, worship Him rightly
Live rightly
— Reflect His character in your conduct
Truth without obedience = hypocrisy.
Obedience without truth = legalism.
But truth + obedience = transformation.
My Prayer
Father, teach me to know You deeply and obey You fully. Let my beliefs be rooted in Your Word, not in culture or convenience. And let my obedience be joyful, not performative. Shape me into someone who lives what they believe—for Your glory alone.
