Starting Early. Finishing Strong
There are moments in life that quietly shape everything that follows.
For me, one of those moments was my 21st birthday.
Most people celebrate 21 as a milestone of arrival. Freedom. Legality. Celebration. But when I woke up that morning, what I heard clearly in my spirit was this:
Start building now. What you build now will shape the rest of your life.
That conviction led me to write Starting Early, Finishing Strong at 21 years old.
I had just read Finishing Strong by Steve Farrar, and it stirred something in me. It challenged me to think about legacy, endurance, and integrity over time. But I kept asking myself — what if we didn’t just focus on finishing well?
What if we started well?
What if my generation understood that the habits we build at 21, the disciplines we form, the character we shape, the faith we cultivate — those things compound over decades?
That book was my attempt to speak to my peers.
To say:
Don’t wait until midlife to get serious about purpose.
Don’t wait until crisis to build discipline.
Don’t wait until failure to cultivate character.
Start early.
Recently, I was looking through my shelves and saw copies of the book stacked there. It stopped me for a moment. Not because of pride — but because of perspective.
It reminded me that purpose is bigger than self-service.
The message I wrote at 21 still speaks to me now:
Build foundations early.
Live with the end in mind.
Understand that consistency beats intensity.
Think generationally, not momentarily.
Finishing strong is not accidental. It’s the result of thousands of early decisions.
I’m grateful that younger version of me had the courage to write something bold. And I’m even more aware now that finishing strong isn’t about applause — it’s about faithfulness.
If you’re in your 20s (or mentoring someone who is), I encourage you to think long-term. The trajectory of your life is shaped by what you decide to build today.
Start early.
So you can finish strong.
